Episode #13 - Elizabeth Farias from Village Farm explains the big dream that’s about to come true for Texas’ only tiny home Agrihood.
Summary
On this episode of Agrihood Radio we’re catching up with Village Farm Representative, Elizabeth Farias.
Today Elizabeth talks about the first of it's kind, a tiny home Agrihood located in Austin, Texas.
During our travels we have yet to visit a tiny home Agrihood. So when we heard about Village Farm, we had to make a special trip to see it in person.
Our trip was met with a warm greeting by Elizabeth and her colleagues. So we wanted to catch back up with her and have her share the story of how Village Farm all began, and the vision of where it’s headed.
We think you’ll be as impressed as we were of how this tiny community has such a big vision for its’ residents.
Elizabeth admits that when she first heard of a tiny home Agrihood, she asked herself the question “how are people going to buy that?” She said “there's no way!”
To her surprise she said she couldn’t have been more wrong in her assumptions.
She tells us that Village Farm attracts first-time home buyers, professionals, baby-boomers, empty-nesters to single parents. She explains this as being an extremely diverse community made up of very like-minded people, who all want to simplify their lives.
It’s continuing to become extremely popular with that segment of the population. So much so, Elizabeth says her sales team is seeing a major influx of people moving to Village Farm from all over the country.
She says “everybody wants a piece of Village Farm!”
We also learned that Village Farm works with four different home builders, Clayton Homes, Platinum Homes, Athens Homes, and Wheelhaus.
Residents can choose from these four builders with a total of nine different floor plans.
However, because of the growing popularity, starting with phase two, Village Farm will be offering additional builders which will also increase the current number of floor plans.
Have a listen as we learn more about the only tiny home Agri-Community we've seen along our 7,000 mile tour.

We're certain Tempal’s story will inspire you. In her pursuit to help her son live a healthier life, she's now helping thousands of others do the same. This interview is up there with the best of them.
Right around the time of her third baby, Tempal was extremely busy. She was a hairstylist working three days a week but making full-time revenue as an assistant around the clock. She says she was spinning her wheels just to keep up with everything that was happening.
About thirteen years ago when her first son was born, her family was facing some health issues with him. He started having eczema and breathing problems after she weaned him from nursing to table food. Tempal was struggling to keep him healthy. And she explains how it was through that process she started searching for answers for his eczema but couldn’t find anything natural that would help him.
Having a background in cosmetology she says, she was educated on the wrong ingredients. Every time she searched, she kept finding products that were full of water, wax, preservatives and junk. She was desperately searching for simple pure nutrients. Her and her husband were dealing with doctors who were giving their young infant steroids which was irritating and burning his skin. She didn’t want to continue giving her young child steroids. So Tempal says she literally turned to Mother Nature.
She went online and ordered $500.00 worth of raw ingredients. She became like a mad scientist in her kitchen, experimenting with various types of natural ingredients. In the process, one thing led to another and she began getting amazing results with her son Nixon’s skin. Once people began hearing about her success, she watched her dedication to help her son turn into a thriving business.
Tempal moved production into a warehouse. Today things have come full circle for her and her family. They are new residents of Aberlin Springs, a farm to table Agri-Community that is aligned with her family's philosophy of healthy living.
Enjoy Tempal's amazing journey and story of inspiration!

He tells us the story about how when him and Amy went to visit Aberlin Springs, he had very low expectations. But when Barbara Aberlin showed him & Amy around the property, he remembers thinking how gorgeous the architecture of the Swiss Chalet was.
He describes the feeling he had while standing out in the courtyard doing a 360 view, looking at the pasture, the pond, the woods. This is the moment he felt a deep sense of serenity and peacefulness of the entire community.
He says that’s point he was “hooked.”
Land has always been important to Mike. And the way Aberlin Springs offers an abundance of wooded homesites with a sense of nature and privacy, is a main feature that began checking all the boxes for him.
Mike and Amy did a walk of the property during their initial visit and the more they saw, the more excited they became, they both knew this was going to be the place they would call home. In fact, that afternoon before they left Mike told Amy “we’re putting a $1,000.00 down to hold a lot.”

Wyoming's Premium Grass Fed Beef- Bobby Thoman
Sunday Apr 14, 2019
Sunday Apr 14, 2019
Episode #10 - Rancher Bobby Thoman from Lost Wells Cattle Company is committed to providing you with a premium beef product, and says “finishing cattle on grass pastures is the way God intended it.”
Summary
On today’s episode of Agrihood Radio, we’re having a visit with grass-fed Cattle Rancher Bobby Thoman in Riverton, Wyoming.
Bobby shares his family’s history of how Lost Wells Cattle Company began and how him and his brother Brendan have continued the tradition of raising quality beef in a world where there’s so much compromisation of business principles.
Lost Wells Cattle Company is built on the foundation of high standards with an emphasis on the humane and ethical treatment of animals. This philosophy ensures the highest quality of grass-fed beef for the end consumer, erasing any doubt of drugs and/or harmful chemicals in their beef.
Bobby says his biggest concern is for the rolls of hamburger found in stores is there could be a thousand different animals in that one roll. He says there's no traceability and there's no knowing what's exactly in that roll of beef.
He also discusses the pink slime scare and how it’s a very common practice of washing bone meal off slaughter equipment. And then it’s frequently added back into the hamburger to supposedly to reduce cost.
In our interview Bobby sheds some light on how some large organic producers are using a marketing ploy by trying to game the system and how sometimes organic isn’t any different than non-organic foods.
That’s why he encourages people to support local farmers and health food stores. We need to support those who are practicing biodynamics, getting the minerals back into the soil.
If we can get our soil healthy then the meat is healthy and then of course that creates healthier results all around.
Enjoy today’s talk with Bobby Thoman from Lost Wells Cattle Company!

During our visit to Aberlin Springs, we had the great pleasure of experiencing what a true farm to table community was all about.
Since our visit we’ve been following up with some of the residents of Aberlin Springs and having them share their personal experience of what it’s like to live in one of the most amazing Agrihoods we have seen along our tour of over twenty properties.
Leah shares her story of how her and her husband Cliff discovered this gem of a community. She also wants to encourage others to do their research and see if there’s an Agri-Community near them. If so, she says you owe it to yourself and your family to have a visit, and see what an incredible living experience Agrihoods offers.
Leah also says she often advises people to make the investment in time, money and resources to know where their food comes from and being willing to pay a higher price for quality food and local food. At some point for not being intentional about your health, she says we’ll either pay the price on the front end where you're invested in higher quality foods, time and resources into finding where it’s available. Or, unfortunately sometimes we pay for it on the backend with poor health. And that cost is much higher because it’s tied to your quality of living and longevity.
Enjoy today’s chat with Leah Lauchlain from Aberlin Springs in Morrow, OH.

Food is Making People Sick- Professor John Ikerd
Sunday Apr 14, 2019
Sunday Apr 14, 2019
Episode #8 - Professor John Ikerd from The University of Missouri tells us why he has made it his life’s work to reconnect people with each other and the earth.
Summary
On this episode of Agrihood Radio, John Ikerd tells us how he wants to improve the process of industrial agriculture, so he’s been educating people based on his years of research and study.
John went from a farm in southwest Missouri to the University of Missouri and eventually ended up with his doctorate degree in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri.
He then went out and worked in the University of Missouri extension system and promoted his ideas of industrial agriculture. This was a time when the country was setting out to make agriculture more efficient and make good food affordable for everyone.
John believed in that philosophy for about the first half of his thirty-year academic career and then during the financial farm crisis of the 1980’s his views began to change for a variety of reasons. The farmer following the advice of so-called experts, ended up with a lot of debt at high interest rates and they were losing their farms.
This had a negative impact on family farms in rural communities. We also began seeing what that was doing to the land in terms pollution and erosion.
John had an eye opening experience when he came to the realization that not only were we sacrificing the land but we were sacrificing it with no good results. We weren't feeding people that were hungry, John explains.
Today we have an epidemic of obesity and diabetes and high blood pressure heart disease and various cancers that are associated with the American diet. And all of those have increased as we've industrialized the agricultural system he says.
In this episode of Agrihood Radio, you’ll learn:
- How in the process of trying to make food cheap, we ended up with foods high in calories, lacking in essential nutrients and that's what's making people sick.
- There’s an epidemic of major health issues such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, which have all increased as we’ve industrialized the entire agricultural food system.
- John explains his ideas of how we can make healthier food more affordable by reducing production costs.
- He also expresses his thoughts and ideas on how there’s many new opportunities today for young people to make enough money as farmers that doesn’t require as much intensive labor as it once did.

Helping Companies Make "What People Want to Eat”- Dr. John Stanton
Sunday Apr 14, 2019
Sunday Apr 14, 2019
Episode #6 - Dr. Stanton has been interviewed on CNN, the Today Show, and NBC Nightly News for his notable career in the food industry of over 25 years. Today he’s elaborating on his role he played in the documentary “Sustainable.”
Summary
On this episode of Agrihood Radio we’re getting a dose of priceless insight from Dr. John Stanton from St. Joseph’s University.
Dr. Stanton has been featured in the popular documentary “Sustainable.”
He has also appeared on national media outlets such as CNN, The Today Show, NBC Nightly News and has been quoted in Forbes, Fortune, Brand Week, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, among many other media outlets.
He is here today to share some insight and knowledge and answer some questions that we may have about the world of Industrial Agriculture.
Dr. Stanton says giving people choices is important, and providing the proper information is key so individuals can make intelligent decisions.
Consuming healthy food is vital. In this interview we take a close look at some of the foods we are consuming that could have adverse effects. Foods like luncheon meats that have been proven to have nitrosamines in them.
We also have a look at how commercial U.S. dairy cows are often given hormones the FDA has cleared as being safe, yet these same hormones have been banned in Canada, Europe and Japan and many other countries who do not allow it.
This is the conversation I would like people to be aware of he explains. So if you are eating processed foods on a regular basis, now you know there is a good chance there are going to be preservatives and some controversy surrounding it. When you go to eat that cow with growth hormones, you know that drug is banned in certain countries, that it is a decision on you. But now you have the information to make your decision accordingly.
Dr. Stanton gives his take on all of this and says we need to make it clear that when other countries ban things, sometimes it’s called non-tariff barriers to entry. So if we look at Europe and GMOs, they were against all GMOs until they started producing some of their own and then it wasn’t quite as bad.
This interview is sure to get you thinking about how your day to day habits that are shaping your future.
Enjoy our discussion!
